A glance at the trio we recognize from their videos as the Thompson Twins makes it pretty clear that they aren’t twins. The group had as many as seven members at one point, but success eluded them until they stripped down to a trio and concentrated on a more techno sound.
The first record the group got into the Hot 100 was Lies, which reached number 30 in 1983. The group was fortunate enough to tour the US later that year as the opening act for the Police. Perhaps that exposure helped catapult Hold Me Now and Doctor! Doctor! higher on the charts in early 1984. Two more top ten hits landed in 1985, after which the group reduced to a duo and slowly faded from popularity.
It’s likely that the group’s videos on MTV aided their success. The group made an appearance on Top of the Pops for Lies and an extended version of their official video for Lies showed up later as well.
