The Playmates were a three-man group that is remembered mostly as a novelty record group. The biggest record in their career was the number 4 hit Beep Beep in 1958, but they placed four other records in the top 100 earlier that year.
Don’t Go Home was their Summer hit and managed to get up to number 23. There’s no sign of them recorded live, which is unfortunate since they reportedly clowned around to entertain the audience – what else would you expect from a group that started out calling itself the Nit-Wits? One video that a fan produced intercuts still shots with some poorly recorded teenagers dancing sometime in the 1950s.
The song was also recorded by the Shirelles in 1967, but their career had ended already and they failed to bring the song back onto the charts.
