1976 John Denver – Fly Away

1976 John Denver – Fly Away

John Denver had an amazing run of hit records in 1975. He topped the Hot 100 with the back-to-back singles Thank God I’m A Country Boy and I’m Sorry. Even the b-side of I’m Sorry was a hit which reached #2 on its own.

On his Christmas special that year, John introduced his latest single, Fly Away. His performance even featured a surprise backup singer, Olivia Newton John.

The record turned out to be a critical turning point for the two artists. While the single peaked at #13 on the Hot 100 in early 1976, it was the last time John reached the top twenty on the Hot 100. It did, however, top the Adult Contemporary chart.

The record did little to help Olivia’s career, either. Her career stalled for three years, and she only came back to life on the charts three years later, when Grease made her a household name again.
