1969 The Carpenters – Ticket To Ride

Richard and Karen Carpenter signed with A&M Records in 1969. The record company made time in a recording studio available and assigned producer Jack Daugherty to oversee their first album, which they named Offerings. Richard did much of the arranging and co-wrote many of the songs.

Sales of the album were poor until the release of their first single. The album contained Richard’s reworked cover of a Beatles record, Ticket To Ride. The single peaked at #54 on the Hot 100 in 1969, but it reached #19 on the Adult Contemporary chart. A&M pulled the album from distribution and reissued it using Ticket To Ride as its new name.

Herb Alpert insisted that the group rework an old Burt Bacharach/Hal David song that had previously been a minor hit for Richard Chamberlain. Their version of Close To You topped the Hot 100 in 1970 and the group’s career took off.
