1958 Johnny Mathis – A Certain Smile

1958 Johnny Mathis – A Certain Smile

Johnny Mathis had perhaps his most successful year on the charts in 1957. “It’s Not for Me to Say and The Twelfth of Never” each reached the top ten on the Hot 100 and Chances Are topped the chart. He must have lost some of his magic after that, because six of his next seven singles all stalled at either #21 or #22.

The one record that did better was a song from a film. Johnny appeared in A Certain Smile and sang the title song. The Academy nominated the song for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1958 but lost out to the title song from Gigi.

Vic Damone released Gigi as a single, but it only reached #88 on the Hot 100 before falling off the chart completely.

Johnny’s single A Certain Smile did much better. It reached #14 on the Hot 100 and even reached #4 in the UK.

Johnny continued recording, and even had a string of hits in the UK, but failed to reach the top ten in the US again until Gina made it up to #6 in 1962.
