1987 The Psychedelic Furs – Heartbreak Beat

Richard Butler and his brother Tim began playing in bands in 1977. Initially called The RKO, then Radio, they played in their own home until the noise caused their family to force them from the house.

Calling themselves The Europeans didn’t catch on so they became The Psychedelic Furs with the release of their first album in 1980. The band’s post-punk music attracted an audience in the UK and a few European countries.

The band’s second album in 1981, Talk, Talk, Talk, included the original version of the song Pretty In Pink. The single almost reached the top forty in the UK but stalled at #43.

The song inspired the name of the 1986 film Pretty In Pink and the band re-recorded the song for the soundtrack album.

The single peaked at #18 on the UK chart and #41 on the US Hot 100.

The band’s biggest hit in the US came from their next album in 1987: Heartbreak Beat spun off their next album and reached #26 on the Hot 100 and #14 on the US Dance chart in 1987.

The band had a series of hits on the US Airplay chart from 1986 to 1991 but never got close to the non-alternative charts again. New albums and singles have followed as recently as 2021.
